Legacy.....Ya Reckon?

It’s a new year, and a time to reflect and start anew, ya reckon? We had a very mild fall and early winter so many ranchers were able to keep their cattle out on grass, but with the snow, colder temperatures and calving season on the horizon, the majority of ranchers are feeding cattle and prepping for calving season.
Although demanding and exhausting, calving season is one of the most vibrant times of ranch life. There is renewed hope and vitality. Being a part of bringing new life into this world does something for the soul and puts things into perspective.
I reckon we have all pondered the questions: “What legacy do we hope to leave our children and grandchildren…….our progeny…..our lineage?” In the ranching community, this question hits differently. Many ranches are five, six and seven generations! Incredible. This mere fact points to the enormity and essence of LEGACY.
Our youngest daughter, Jacy Overstreet wrote a very powerful letter back in December of 2022. In that letter, she spoke of legacy. Here is a partial excerpt:
“Legacy is the heart….It’s the giving of something to be valued and treasured by those who remain once you leave this earth. It’s the purpose. It’s the acknowledgment of rich history and the hope for a prosperous tomorrow. It’s the passing down of tradition. It’s the hard work and perseverance. It’s the joy in the little things. It’s the celebration of life….It’s real and its raw. And its special….so special…..”
Whether you are a first or multi-generation rancher, general business owner, or someone who is pondering his/her future I hope you will take some time to think about your legacy. I will be sharing more about this and an upcoming workshop Broadwater Conservation District will be hosting in March.
