MSU Extension to Host Winter Programs

The new year is off fast and furious for MSU Extension in Broadwater County with multiple programs going on in the next couple of months. All of the programs are open to the public. Here is a snapshot of what is going on with MSU Extension in your county.
The next program in the Winter Rancher Roundtable series will take place on Tuesday, January 21 at 5:30 pm. The theme for this program is cattle and herd health. The featured speaker is Dr. Julia Herman, Beef Cattle Veterinarian, with the National Cattleman’s Beef Association based out of Colorado. Dr. Herman will be discussing vaccine technology and biosecurity. The second speaker is from Chuteside Veterinary Service near Three Forks who will discuss management of parasites and fly control and insecticide resistance. It will take place at The Lodge of Townsend, and there is no cost to attend. A meal is provided so please, RSVP by Tuesday, January 14.
The next program is an Initial Private Pesticide Applicator Training on Wednesday, January 29 from 8:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the 4-H Building near Townsend. Through this training, landowners can obtain their private pesticide applicator license. A private pesticide applicator license allows the license holder to purchase and use restricted-use pesticides (i.e. Tordon or Rozol) on land they own, rent or lease. The training also provides credits for current private, commercial or government applicators. The cost for new applicators is $35 which includes the manuals. The cost for current applicators is $15. Lunch is provided. Please sign up by Friday, January 17.
The annual Southwest Montana Crop School will be on Thursday, February 13th at Headwaters Livestock Auction near Three Forks. The focus of the program this year is precision agriculture with two speakers discussing this topic. They will discuss using drones to map field variability and weeds and precision weed control. Weather permitting a drone demonstration will be done. Other topics include soils, nozzle selection and control of cheatgrass on rangeland. There is no cost for this program. Master Gardener Core Class (previously Level 1) is an eight-week course on Mondays starting February 24 until April 14 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in Townsend. It is geared towards beginner and intermediate gardeners and covers soils, fertilizer, compost, plant growth, vegetables, flowers, tree and lawn care, fruit production and integrated pest management. Participants have the option of becoming a certified Master Gardener by passing a test and completing volunteer hours. The cost is $90. A $25 refund will be given after the completion of optional volunteer hours. The sign-up deadline is February 10th.
