New year, new me. So far, I have been doing pretty well in adult life, but now I am starting to realize the responsibility I will have to take up as I get older. I’ll be honest, I have no clue how I will accomplish this, but I am going to do my best, and luckily, I have an amazing support system behind me to get my feet on the ground. As I am spending my winter break in the state of Wisconsin, I have had time to think seriously about some New Year resolutions.
First, I want to create a budget by March that will effectively manage the money I need to spend/save on my education, day-to-day living, future bills, and a future vehicle. I have no clue how I will do this. I currently don’t have any bills, am working on paying off loans that are still deferred, and work two jobs, so money is pretty simple. I put my highest-paying paycheck in my savings account and my lower in my checking. As I formulate my budget, this will change to accurately meet my needs, but to limit the amount of stress I am going to take it one day at a time.
I also want to buy a car and pay for my insurance and registration by the end of the fall. My poor car is getting close to retirement and I need to find a reliable vehicle that will take me the long distances I intend to travel. I plan to do this by taking as many college credits as I can during this next spring semester and summer to hopefully limit the credits needed to be taken in the next fall semester and further allow me time to work a more stable job. I also plan on working throughout the summer as a veterinary assistant and managing my money well through the summer months to set me up for success.
Last but definitely not least, I want to start paying my phone bill by the start of the summer. It seems like a small task considering it is a small monthly bill to pay compared to others, but it is a bigger step into independence. Even though I am living on my own, I am still highly dependent on my parents for the things I do daily. I believe this goal is the easiest, but once I take the step, every other responsibility will follow soon thereafter.
I have always been terrible at New Year's resolutions, but as these have already been on my mind I believe I can make it work. Now I just need to take everything one step at a time as I grab a better foot-hold on the unavoidable responsibilities of being an adult. As I continue going throughout my week I think of the wise words of John Michael Montgomery in his song Life’s a Dance, “Don’t worry about what you don’t know, life’s a dance you learn as you go.”
