1941
“Gary Cooper Featured in Weekend Shows”
“The Northwest Mounted Police” starring Gary Cooper will be shown in Townsend at the Rex theatre this Friday and Saturday according to announcements made by manager B.F. Sautter.
Mr. Cooper, a Helena born son, is one of the favorite movie actors of the community and the announcement of this showing will be of special interest to them.

Miss Althea Hale, who has been convalescing from the flu at the home of her sister, Mrs. R.R. Kimpton has returned to her duties at the Broadwater hospital.
Mrs. Chas. Zimmerman and son, Michael, of Butte have been visiting over the week end with Mrs. Zimmerman’s mother, Mrs. Hadley Rice here.
Miss Ann Whaley returned to Townsend Sunday evening from a six-week vacation trip in California. She returned home in company with her brother, Donald, and Henry and Bill Huth, by car. The boys had had a fine trip and big time doing California’s big cities and seeing the Rose Bowl game on New Years.
1958
“Confirmation Services at St. Johns Church”
Confirmation services were held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Townsend Sunday evening for a class of 13 young people. Bishop Sterling of Helena preached at the services.
Confirmed were Coy and Helen Damuth, James and Mary Etzwiler, Deena Hollaway, Anthony Krohn, James and Marcia Lots, Thomas Massa, Susan McElravy, Daniel Neifert and Sharon and Susan Rains.
A reception was held following the services.
“Tim Ragen Wins Third Prize in Statewide Contest”
Tim Ragen, age 6, of Townsend Elementary school has been selected as 3rd place winner for 1st grade children in the Montana Christmas Seal coloring contest, John H. Casebolt, Executive Director of the Montana Tuberculosis Association has announced.
Tim is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Ragen. His first grade teacher at Townsend is Bertha Hanson. More than 150 Broadwater County primary-grade children took part in the coloring contest, designed to aid teachers in stimulating interest in tuberculosis control and good general health habits. The children colored an 8 ½ x 14-inch replica of the 1957 Christmas Seal.
Tim’s entry was selected, along with other state winners by a panel of three Montana artists: Irvin “Shorty” Shope, prominent professional artist; Mrs. Ray O. Bjork, art teacher and accomplished artist; and Shirley Kemp Gannon, national prize-winning designer.
Approximately 17,000 Montana children took part in the state-wide coloring contest.
1975
“East of Townsend”
Mr. and Ms. Sam Kirksey spent Tuesday through Friday in Billings where Same went through the Clinic.
Catherine McNulty of Wibaux, Paul Kukowski of Beach, North Dakota and Donnie Ross of Chinook were recent visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Monte Schnur and family.
Mr. and Mrs. Jon Bieber and family and LeRoy Bieber and family all of Helena visited Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bieber.
Cindy Coonis was an overnight guest Friday of Joann Shindoll. Jody Brown was an overnight guest Saturday and Sunday.
“Winston News”
With the help of brother, Tim and big Joe Clark truck, Mr. and Mrs. David Clark bundled wee Bonnie up and moved their house and saddle horses to the Castle Mountain Ranch where David has employment.
Helen Moe’s brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Gross of Placerville, California are visiting the Moes and being refreshed by our pure mountain air.
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Masolo were dinner guests at the birthday dinner at the Larry Sullivan home honoring David Masolo and Larry Sullivan Sunday.
1997
“Around Town News”
Recent snow and cold makes for a very short list of activities pursued by local residents last week. Most residents opted to stay in their homes over the week end where they could stay warm. I can’t say I blame them because that is exactly what I did. The highlight of the weekend was going out to feed the rabbits.
Lilliam Fisher returned last week following a two-week stay in Havre over the Christmas holiday at the home of her daughter, Carla and Ken Speckman, Amy and Joel.
K.C. and David Johnson, Jill, Eric and Jennifer had Barney and Jean Johnson over for dinner Sunday.
Thursday, Doreen Sautter visited Helen Turcotte. Later she attended the United Methodist Women’s meeting at the church. Attending were Ruby Cox, Doreen Sautter, Martha Schmidt, Gladys Armstrong, Mary Wright, Rene Dagnall, Ione Schwisow, Georgia Meng, Peggy Huth, Ruth Zimmerman, Peggy Kenney, Ann Poynton, Hallie Alexander, Cheryl Russell and Emma, and Rev. Mike Dexter.
