On Monday, December 16, the Broadwater High, and Townsend Middle School performed their Christmas Concert together. Special performances were given, and all of the music was beautiful.
It started with a group of guitars, Kiera Wheeler, Kayleigh Conner, and Maddy Zaharko, accompanied by the piano, Ana Reinke, then a guitarist and banjo took the stage. Isaiah Cassidy, guitar, and Ryan Christensen, banjo, played together. They took a banjo piece and found out what worked for the guitar, basically writing their own music. Their favorite piece they performed was ‘Joy to the World’. Ryan Christensen, who took up banjo because of his grandpa and a lady named ‘Renee Rose’, has been working hard to improve his skills. “I love playing the banjo because it's awesome. It's not very common and not a lot of people play it. It’s unique, and I feel like Billy Strings playing it.”
After several songs, the duo, Haylie Reinke, the bass clarinet and Jazlyn Martin, the tenor saxophone, took the stage. Their favorite piece throughout the night was “On a Winter's Eve” They performed two songs, ‘Rocking Around the Christmas Tree’ and ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’. Although their classics, Reinke and Martin added personality and made the music their own. Some of the advice given to the younger crew by Jazlyn Martin was, “I was just blunt. I told them ‘It's happening. It's happening and it's okay to be nervous but you just have to go for it.’”
They gave several pieces of advice to the rest of the band, things to keep their nerves down. Stay calm, especially with all the eyes on them. Haylie took a more positive approach saying, “I tried to just support them. I would say ‘It’s not that bad, you sounded really good.’”
Although our band always sounds good, that night was a night to remember. Everyone did a fantastic job and performed their part of the piece perfectly. We look forward to their future productions and are proud of how hard they worked to get where they are.
