Long-time Townsend educator and current middle school principal Brad Racht was named the district’s interim superintendent during the Townsend Schools Board of Trustees Meeting on Dec. 12. Racht will take point on the superintendent’s duties through the end of the school year, following the departure of Susie Hedalen. Hedalen becomes the state’s new Superintendent of Public Schools following her election in November.
“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to do it,” Racht told board members as he accepted the position. “Recognize that I have a lot to learn. . . . There’s a lot of support around, and I’m grateful for that. So we’ll get it done.”
Racht has been with Townsend Schools for nearly a quarter century, joining as a PE Teacher and basketball coach and also serving as K-8 principal for several years.
The board will be accepting applications to permanently replace Hedalen through Jan. 15, 2025, with interviews to begin Feb. 3. The new superintendent would begin July 1, 2025.
