East Helena Chief of Police Ed Sanders told the East Helena City Council that his department saw 455 calls for service in the month of November, leading to 33 case reports. Sanders spoke at the council’s regular December 3 meeting.
“We’ve had another busy month,” Chief Sanders said. Heading the list were 22 parking calls, nine citizen assists, nine crash reports, and seven animal calls.
One concern Chief Sanders touched on, reporting on discussions from the Criminal Justice Citizens Council Meeting, was overcrowding in the Lewis and Clark County Jail. A smaller committee was tasked with looking into ways to alleviate the issue.
The main problem, Sanders said, is the large number of detainees – approximately 45 – who have been sentenced to state prison and are awaiting transfer to the state facility.
“It’s a big problem, and one there’s no solution for right now.”
