The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will allow Broadwater County to add a secondary ramp area as part of an upcoming project to improve the Townsend Airport.

At the Nov. 25 Broadwater County Commission meeting, Chair Darryl Folkvord explained that the FAA originally rejected the additional ramp area as part of the grant-funded project but has since reversed itself.

“Since then they’ve reconsidered,” Folkvord said. “They see it as a safety issue, and they’ve decided to re-award that part” of the original grant. The county will need to submit a new grant application for the funds.

The $214,500 price tag for the ramp was included in the original bid for the project, Folkvord said, so the total cost to the county for the project will not change. The improvements will cost $4.012 million – $2 million less than the original estimate for the project.

The county will need to access the funding for the addition from the bipartisan infrastructure fund, which requires a new grant application for the funding.

Improvements at the Townsend Airport will begin in the spring of 2025.
