The Broadwater County Lions presented the Townsend Elementary School 3rd grade students with A for Attitude, The little book of inspiration and encouragement for people of all ages by Australian author Julie Davey.

The first statement in the book is a quote from Henry Ford, “Whether you think you can or think you cannot, you are right.” The lesson further states, “Notice how much easier it is to get things done when you decide to try”.

The achievement section of the book includes the statement, “Remember the good feeling you had when you first got your shoes on the right feet?”

The author has also written a lesson outline for the teachers to use in the classroom. The book is filled with lessons by which a person can live a rewarding life.

The Lions learned about the book from an Australian Lions club and has been presenting the book to the Townsend Elementary 3rd grade students since 2019. It is the first time the book has been introduced in the United States.

During the presentation, the students participate in the gossip (telegraph) game. The students are seated by class and each class receives a different message. The teacher whispers a statement in the first student’s ear. The student then whispers the statement to the next student. This continues until the last student receives the message. The message received by the last student is then compared to the original message. One of the favorite results was Jami Lawson’s message that “third graders are awesome” morphing into “Mrs. Lawson is awesome”.

About twenty messages have been sent during the six years of the program and only once has the original message been received by the last student.

The results provide an opportunity for the teachers and Elementary Principal, Steven Cook, an opportunity to discuss statements attributed to other students. Did the statement come directly from the student involved or was it from a student who heard it from someone else? Perhaps the message wasn’t heard correctly, like in the gossip game, when it was relayed to other students.

Presenting the books were Lions: Richard Heida, Patti Hanson, Susie Hedalen, Bob and Sheri Brastrup.
