I have been a mess lately. My motivation is down and I find it incredibly hard to sit down to tackle all of the assignments that I have to do for the day without finding any excuse to get up and do something else. Turns out, I am not the only one feeling that all of my other friends are getting the same draining feeling, so I have come to the conclusion that it must be about time for a break from school. Unfortunately, we don’t get a break until we have Veteran’s Day off and half a week for Thanksgiving Break. In the meantime, I have been finding ways to keep myself responsible while also satisfying those “excuses.”

During the week, I pushed myself to tackle all my homework for the day before doing anything else. In return, I would reward myself with some sort of treat, usually my favorite La Croix or even something as simple as spending time scrolling social media or hanging out with friends. It was incredibly hard to stay focused, but by the end, I had the satisfaction of not worrying about homework and something enjoyable to turn my mind toward.

As the weekend neared, more events happened that pushed my motivation to finish school work, that being Holy Spirit Night and a get-together with my small group friends. On Friday night, the five girls in our small group piled into a car and carpooled to Northview Church where we would spend four hours studying God’s Word and learning more about who the Holy Spirit is and what he does. By the end, I felt renewed and confident about the main goal of all of my education. On Saturday night, we met up at one of our small group members' apartments to eat chili and apple dump cake and drink sparkling cider during a game night. The poor neighbors may have woken up from all of our laughing, but this night was so much fun and a much-needed break from the endless cycle of classes and homework.

Finding a balance between school life and personal life can be challenging, but establishing a method to stay responsible is crucial. Personally, I’ve found success with a reward system. Other effective strategies include having an accountability buddy, setting up pre-commitments - like laying out homework to tackle after lunch - or writing down progressively larger goals. Staying responsible is essential, even when motivation is lacking. Remember, there will always be breaks or vacations to look forward to, so keep pushing through and don’t give up!
