Townsend Resident Receives More Than Tulip Bulbs

Sandy Vanover loves her flower garden. She especially enjoys planting tulip bulbs during the warm fall days. Last Tuesday her bulbs arrived. She laid the box from Brecks’ Flowers on the counter while she fixed dinner. As she and her husband Ted were eating, they noticed a little black snake crawling out of one of the air holes in the box. Their cat Homer sniffed the snake but was spooked when it moved.
Ted said they jumped up, covered the 10-inch-long snake with a container, slipped a piece of paper under the container, and then flipped the snake into the container. The striped reptile with a flat head seemed glad to get out of the tulip box. The outside of the box ironically read: ”Open me as soon as possible. I came all the way from Holland and I want to breathe some North American Air.”
Both Ted and Sandy were anxious to learn what kind of snake it is, and where it came from. They planned to call Allison Kosto, county extension agent, and to Brecks’ Flowers to let them know they are mailing snakes.
Ted said he was familiar with the rattlers and bull snakes who live in dens in Montana. He checked to see what kind of snakes live in Ohio, from where the box was mailed. He still could not identify it.
By Friday, the snake had died, but Vanovers would like to identify it if possible.
