At a dinner Saturday members of the American Legion Post 42 Auxiliary donated $4,000 to Broadwater County emergency service organizations.
Auxiliary President Debbie Westfall presented $1,000 each to the county sheriff’s office, city and rural fire department, the search and rescue unit and ambulance services.
“We were able to accumulate this money through our weekly bingo games so we decided to give back to the community,” Westfall explained.
The 86-member Auxiliary group raised the money in just under 18 months by holding bingo at the American Legion building on Tuesdays. The third Tuesday of the month is always “Extravaganza” night featuring dinner and a chance to play for $21 at the door.
Westfall encouraged new members to join. She explained further: “That includes men or women. We have both as members of our group”.
To qualify for membership in the auxiliary, a person must have a family member who has served or is serving in the military.
Representatives from emergency services organizations who accepted the awards were Sheriff Nick Rauser and Captain Mark Wood, Rural Fire Department Vivian Boaz; City Fire Department head Shawn Simon; Mike Stapp, Search and Rescue and Ambulance Cyrus Brandt.
Sheriff’s Department Mark Wood commented following the ceremony, that the sheriff’s department would be using the money to supplement funds to purchase trauma kits for each of their 14 patrol cars.
