It was a beautiful night in Big Timber when the Sweet Grass Herders took on the Townsend Bulldogs. This game had large playoff implications for the Bulldogs who hoped to keep their dreams of a playoff berth alive. The Bulldogs came into the game 3-3 coming off a win to Columbus. The Herders were 3-4 coming into the game hoping for their first Southern B win on their senior night.
The Herders started with an attempted onside kick that didn’t fool the Bulldogs and they recovered with good field position. This run didn’t end in any points as the Bulldogs fumbled with the Herders recovering. Townsend kept their good special teams play going with a blocked punt that gave them good field position. Sawyer Horne ran a touchdown in and with the extra point being good the scoring started with a 7-0 lead. The Dawgs kept the offensive momentum going on their next possession with another rushing touchdown and a good extra point put the Dawgs up 14-0. Logan Johnson then added a field goal to put the Bulldogs up 17-0. The first quarter ended with a Colt Barnard interception to give the Bulldogs the ball back entering the second quarter.
The first Herders' possession of the second quarter was stopped when Colt Barnard didn’t give up on a long pass by Sweet Grass and forced a fumble that the Bulldogs recovered. Tavyn Anderson capped off a long drive with a rushing touchdown with 6 minutes left in the second quarter. The extra point brought the score to 24-0. On the next Sweet Grass possession Deegan Mattson had an interception which led to a Tavyn Anderson 15-yard- passing touchdown to Sawyer Horne. That brought the score to 31-0 after the extra point. On the next Herder possession Hunter McCartney had an electric strip fumble recovery that he took down to the 2-yard line. He could smell the endzone but couldn’t quite get there. Sawyer Horne added another rushing touchdown to his already great rushing day. The extra point being good made the score 38-0. The next Herder possession was stopped when Tavyn Anderson had an awesome interception return for a touchdown with the extra point the score was 45-0 to end the half.
The third quarter started with a running clock and after a slow offense start Bradan Martin broke loose for another Bulldog touchdown to make the score 52-0 at the end of the third quarter. Sweet Grass did manage a good drive during the third quarter and found the end of the third with the Herders in a good scoring position.
The fourth quarter started with a Herders touchdown but the Bulldog defense held up and managed to block the extra point to make the score 52-6. The Bulldog defense was still on their A-game when Deegan Mattson snagged another interception. The ensuing Bulldog offensive possession saw Braden Forest Martin as he skedaddled for a 55-yard rushing touchdown. Then Johnson added the extra point to bring the score to 59-6 which was the final score when the clock hit zero on a big Townsend win.
Next week the Bulldogs play the Jefferson Panthers over in Boulder. This game will be a major deciding factor in the Bulldogs' playoff hopes. Hopefully, the Bulldogs can keep the stellar play going, stay strong on defense and come out of Boulder with a big win. Hope to see you over there. GO DAWGS!!
