Ya Reckon?
Author: Denise White Thompson, Rancher and Columnist
Hello Folks,
Even with some rather warm days recently, Fall is certainly in the air, ya reckon?
Rudeneja…..a Lithuanian word that describes the way nature and/or the weather begins to feel like Autumn. I don’t know about you, but Fall is my absolute favorite time of year. I love the colors and smells, crisp air and warm sun, and the ranch and farm work that comes with the season. Everyone is feverishly getting their 3rd cutting of hay put up, harvesting grain and pulling in the bumper potato crop by the truckloads. Ranchers are beginning to consolidate their cattle in the high country and preparing to bring them home to tend to their herds and ready the calves for market. What a sight! Our county is so rich in agriculture.
Allow me to introduce myself. I am Denise Thompson. I have lived in Broadwater County my entire life. I married my high school sweetheart, Vince Thompson, just out of high school. We have both been immersed in agriculture our entire lives, we raised our four children in the same fashion, and now we enjoy seeing our grandchildren hold onto the deep taproot of agriculture in their lineage.
To you, the readers of the MT43 News, I consider it a privilege to spend a few moments now and then with each of you, sharing…..For the Love of AG……from the heart of a Western woman!
Ya Reckon? Well, I grew up hearing this phrase all of the time from my father. Our children have grown up hearing this phrase from their grandfather. Fortunately, our six grandchildren are growing up hearing this phrase from their great-grandfather. It is a rather sweet heritage that we are holding close to our hearts, and a perfect title for my agriculture column meant to bring awareness, shed some light, and pay homage to the all-important world of Ag......Ya Reckon? Ya think? Ya wonder? Ya imagine? Ya suppose? Ya believe something to be true or possible?
I do not consider myself a writer, but I love to write and share. I thank Nancy Marks, one of the editors-in-chief, for reaching out to me and encouraging me to create this column for the paper and each of you who take the time to read my ramblings.
I will end with a photo of our eldest grandchild, Cinch Owen Reynolds (15 years old), hard at work with his custom haying business, using the baler he bought with his own money he earned from selling his 4-H steer, and the old tractor he is leasing from his 3rd cousin, Shawn Lewis. This summer has been a year of tremendous growth and maturity for this young lad.
For the Love of Ag,
