On October 9 the Canton Church hosted the 6th annual middle school history outing. Teachers Tyler Patrick and Lisa Campbell accompanied the seventh-grade students to the Canton Church. The seventh-grade students are the class that study Montana History. The outing at the Canton Church teaches the students about the town of Canton, the history of the Canton Church and the history of Broadwater County.
The official history books do not cover much of the history of Broadwater County. Our outing is to give the students a feel for the very rich history of Broadwater County and if we can get even one student interested in history it is all worth the effort.
The students first attend a presentation on the history of the county; then, we feed them a lunch of hamburgers/hotdogs, chips, cookies and water AND give them a chance to burn off some energy in the park at the Church. Canton Church Restoration Board members Keith Kirscher, Barbara Mock, Bob Tootell and Pam Sample cooked and served the lunch.
Afterward, the students visit St. Joseph’s cemetery (the Canton cemetery) and are given the task of finding the oldest grave site, the newest grave site, the youngest person buried and the oldest person.
The Historic Canton Church was built in 1875 and was the seventh church built in Montana. Canton Church Restoration, Inc. is responsible for the restoration and maintenance of the Canton Church.
