1912

“Some 'Opinion' Opinions"

Taxpayers are just now receiving notices from Treasurer Williams that their 1912 taxes are due. And they are pretty strong at that. Townsend residents are paying a quarter less than 34 mills, but the democratic party has been running Broadwater County affairs, so we have no kick coming on high taxation. And with the high taxes we are paying the county hasn't even a decent courthouse to show for it; nor good roads. But we pay the taxes.

“Personal News"

Miss Ann Marie Zimmerman was one of the many spectators that witnessed the Montana Grizzly team win from the Montana Bobcats in their annual championship football game in Butte Saturday. Miss Zimmerman made the trip over and visited her brother, Charles, and family returning Sunday. The score on the game was 6-0 for the Missoula Grizzly team.

1968

“Mark Meyer Wins Airplane Trip"

Mark Meyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Meyer, was one of six Independent Record carrier boys to win a flight on a Western Airline 737 jet.

The boys will leave Helena Friday (tomorrow) afternoon on a round-trip flight to Great Falls. In Great Falls they will tour WAL and Federal Aviation Agency facilities before the return flight.

They were awarded the trip for their work in circulation, collections, handling of complaints and general attitude - enthusiasm, cooperation, ideas and promotional ability.

Wayne Edward Herrington has been discharged from the U.S. Navy and is at home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Herrington and Lois. Wayne has been stationed in the South Pacific in the Philippines Islands.

David Clark has enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and is leaving on Wednesday for active duty. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Clark, will drive him to Butte and he will leave for camp. David graduated from Broadwater County High School last spring. All Winston residents wish David good luck and his many friends will miss him.

Marvin Albright was home from Northern Montana College in Havre to spend the weekend with his family.

Mrs. Robert Masolo attended a Catholic Deanery meeting in Bozeman Sunday.

Chris Cox and classmate, Paula Jacobson of Glasgow, spent the weekend with Chris's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Cox. They are students at Montana State University in Bozeman.

“Around Town News"

Patti and Paul Schwisow, Erin and Michael, Missoula, visited here over the weekend with their parents, Ione Schwisow and John and Sharley Ragen.

Mary Alice Upton and Ethel O'Hern traveled to Butte Wednesday to attend the American Legion meeting. Thursday Mary Alice, Ethel and Gen Walter attended the American Legion meeting in Helena. Saturday, they attended the Legion dinner in Townsend.

Joyce and Bill Lane hosted a birthday dinner Monday for Joann Motta. Guests were Jean and Barney Johnson, Jim and Tara Lane, Chandler, and Colten, Franklin and Judy Slifka, Frank Slifka, Marion Cass and Jay Lane and Sara. Joann returned to her home in Dallas, Texas Wednesday.

Jay and Colleen Meyer, John and Mary, Stevensville, visited over Saturday and Sunday with their aunt, Lillian Fisher.

Bernice Cartwright and Mary Miller traveled to White Sulphur Springs recently to have dinner at the senior center and visit with several friends in the area.
