On the first day at NDSU, I was told that the friendships I made in the first six weeks of college would most likely determine the lifetime friends that I would have. During the first few weeks, I put so much pressure on myself to find friends, but of course, I quickly fell out of contact with the people I had started to talk to. Four weeks in, after “giving up” on the search for friends, I have found friends that will last for a long time.
The Biology Hicks, Professor Smith named Greta, Taylor, Gwen, Glen, Elias, and me. About two weeks into our first college year, the people at my table in General Biology 1 and I started talking nonstop. We found out that we had so much in common. We love hunting and fishing, country music, and Jesus, and our main goal is to work in the agricultural industry around animals. Professor Smith, the Biology professor, found our friendship and interests exciting and deemed us as “The Biology Hicks, but in a good way". Since the day our table was given a title, we have hung out as much as possible. Half of our hang-out sessions are full of studying the various classes that we share, but we always make room for our silly meaningless conversations or deep discussions.
Most of my friends are freshmen, but I have also made an amazing friend who I know I can lean toward in any and every situation. As a senior studying Natural Resource Management, Regan has been extremely welcoming and such an encouragement throughout my transition into college. I met Regan through Chi Alpha when I got connected to her small group. She shared my passion for agriculture through a Godly lens and in any free time we get, we take the time to talk about how our week is going and encourage each other through that. For example, this week, Regan and I decided to treat ourselves to our favorite, Caribou Coffee, and we talked for hours and hours about anything and everything. She may be my small group leader, but our friendship runs deeper than an education-based relationship and I am so thankful for that.
I spent the first two weeks of my college experience stressing because I wanted to know people at the college I was going to where I ultimately knew nobody. But, while putting pressure on myself I never found what I was looking for. It was when I let go of my worries that I found the most incredible friends. Your group of people is out there. No matter what college, trade school, workplace, church, or other community setting you are in there will be people who will support you and love having a special friendship with you. Thus, there is no reason to worry about the people you will meet. Take life as it comes and grasp onto the things that will mean so much as you walk through your journey!
