If I plan to shop at Walmart, I must leave at approximately 12:30 p.m. to arrive at 12:45 p.m. I need to get beef, rice, scissors, lightbulbs, and ziploc bags. Then, I need to leave by 1:15 so I can go back to my dorm to spend the rest of the afternoon studying a, b, and c. This is the way my brain processes every scenario possible. I need to know every single detail and follow the perfect time spans. However, I have realized in these first few weeks of college that that is utterly absurd, and I have to do less extreme planning on my simple day-to-day activities, and instead take the day as it passes.
For example, this week I got my fuel pump fixed, it didn’t go my way and I couldn’t fix it, but I met a construction management major who knew exactly how to fix a fuel pump and did it for me. I took it out for a test drive, and it started sputtering and leaking fuel everywhere, but I looked at the situation, took a deep breath and thought, and put an adapter on the fuel line, fixing the situation. I was in a rush to get back to the dorm after Chi Alpha, but instead, I ran into a new friend and talked to him about cowboy boots and his nursing major. Even though I was in a hurry, I was so incredibly grateful to meet a new friend. And lastly, that same new friend hung out with me today when I had nothing better to do and we discussed every little and large detail about our lives.
In life, not everything can go your way, as much as we wish that to be true. Instead, life is going to throw many curveballs in your direction. The only constant within my day-to-day routine is my sleep schedule and my classes. Everything else is decided on a whim. I usually dedicate time between classes and until 5 pm for homework. My evenings then, are usually spent hanging out with friends, attending Chi Alpha small groups or worship services, reading a book, or working on something else that needs to be done on my own time.
Written on paper, a schedule like this seems simple and easily adaptable. However, it is extremely stressful and full of difficult changes. This is the time to give yourself some grace. Whenever trials such as this happen, it is important to sit back, make a wise decision, and then enjoy the moment. Life is too short to worry about the little things that happen daily, and the college experience is only a blip concerning a lifespan, but this small window full of opportunities you could experience are those that will live on for the rest of your life. Take advantage of the opportunities that come your way and step into an adventure that will last a lifetime.
