On Friday, August 30, the Broadwater High School Bulldogs opened their football season with a win over the Cut Bank Wolves. The captains –Hunter McCartney, Deegan Mattson, Eric Humphreys, Sawyer Horne, and Cael Sell– all showed their dedication before the season had officially started.

During the summer the team prepared for the season by doing things like daily lifting, weekly throwing, and several camps. Camps were located in the state at colleges such as MSU, Western, Tech, and Carrol; however, some boys also traveled to places in Washington and Oregon to participate in camps. Over the summer the team grew together and did more than just play football. They went to the lake, took trips to Helena, golfed, had camping trips, and floated the river to improve their chemistry. Their bonding paid off, and the team was able to fit together seamlessly during the game.

The passes thrown by quarterback Tavyn Anderson were able to find their targets and secured many first downs and two touchdowns left unanswered by the opposing team. Not only was Tavyn able to assist in two touchdowns, but he was also able to catch an interception and carry it in for a pick-six.

Not only was Tavyn able to have an impressive game but so was Hunter McCartney. McCartney, senior and captain, had a phenomenal game defensively. Being the inside linebacker, he was able to get four tackles, two assists, one sack, and helped the team as much as he could defensively. The thing that helped Hunter prepare for the game was, “getting there early and doing a little lift with the team. Nothing is more exciting and gets you pumped like being with your team before the first game.”

This first win sets a positive tone for the rest of the season. It helps the team keep their head up and gives them motivation for the upcoming games. One upcoming game is on Friday, September 6, where the Bulldogs will face the Florence Falcons. The kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm, and the entire Broadwater community eagerly anticipates the next game.
