Summer Nears End with Final Slice of Summer Event
MT 43 News Staff Reporter
The final Slice of Summer last Thursday was about babies and balloons. New mothers rocked infants while their toddlers played on the bouncy toys.
The most popular spot for kids was standing line for a free piece of balloon art. Helena man Neil Sautter of Sautter Balloons spent time making balloon animals, hats, instruments and other interesting balloon forms. He blew up long skinny balloons from 3:30 p.m. until long after 5:00 p.m. Kids left the line grinning from ear-to-ear carrying a monkey or an angel or wearing a balloon hat, according to Rotarian Jody Toney.
The weather was perfect for people to lounge in their lawn chairs to listen to acoustic guitarist Travis Yost who provided the music.
Rotarians served up bouncy houses for toddlers and older kids. Everyone went swimming at the pool for free. Lions’ burgers went fast as did Rotary booth pizza and ice cream. The mental Health Awareness group manned a booth and Trailhead Church served over 300 snowcones, according to organizer Kelley Gobbs.
Elkhorn Community Church sponsored a climbing wall, according to Jessica Crusch, organizer. The Townsend church had borrowed the climbing wall from The Bridge, a Belgrade church. “We try to support Slice of Summer as a kid event. It gives the kids something to do, and we love talking to with them,” she said.
Search and Rescue display was a popular destination for event goers. Board member Steve Wyatt explained their raffle fundraiser: “We try to raise funds by selling tickets for a gift certificate from Rocky Mountain Supply and two cash prizes. “
On display were the Seach and Rescue side-by-side four- wheeler donated by Graymont Western Mine and their new snowambulance paid for by an anonymous donor. Wyatt explained money they raised would be used to replace their rescue lake boat and two vehicles they use when they are called out to an emergency.
