County Residents Receive Notice of Missing Solid Waste Assessments

County Solid Waste 08022024

By Linda Kent

Broadwater County property taxpayers incorrectly billed for 2022-23 and 2023-24 solid waste assessments received notice of the corrected amounts due in July. Business and residential property owners were underbilled or not billed during those years due to an error in transferring assessment data from one fiscal year to the next in the county’s accounting system. The error was discovered during a 2023 county audit.

The county put new procedures in place in June 2024 to ensure that similar errors do not occur in the future.

The missing assessments, which will be due May 31, 2025, represent around $250,000 for the county’s solid waste fund. As an enterprise fund of the county, the Solid Waste Department’s budget comes solely from the revenue generated by assessments and fees. None of the department’s $1 million budget comes from the county general fund. Money generated from payment of under-billed assessments will cover operating deficits for the fund’s previous two budget years.

Taxpayers who receive notice that they were underbilled can pay the full amount due or contact the public works department to make payment arrangements. Once full payment is received, they will receive a window decal which will allow for access to the county’s solid waste collection sites.
