1912

“Doings of a Week”

The Townsend House served a special dinner last Sunday, all of the vegetables being from the Confederate Creek Farm. Mine Host Cloy also added other specialties to the menu, all of which were heartily enjoyed by the guests.

Dr. Gilham and his son, Ralph, of Radersburg, and Wm. Ragen left Wednesday on a trip through the Big Belt range of mountains where they will put in time fishing, prospecting and having a general good time. They expect to take at least a couple of weeks outing.

Jim Moore is having his drink emporium repapered, repainted and otherwise put in shipshape condition this week.

Lost – on Deep Creek last Sunday, four pairs of hip gum boots, one fish basket and two fish. Reward for return to this office.

Dr. Gilham acted in the capacity of stork at the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. Plymale Tuesday and a nice little daughter is the result of his visit.

John Hammer of Lombard was a visitor in town over Sunday. John is still doing a little mining work and brought in with him some nice specimens of the yellow metal.

1940

“Personal News”

Mr. and Mrs. Howard Wallace were in the city Monday. They had just returned from a tour of Yellowstone Park and Mr. Wallace is making preparations to attend the North Montana Fair at Great Falls and exhibit his Hereford prize winners. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Grimm and Mrs. Alta Olsen were with the Wallaces on their trip through the park.

Miss Betty Joe Peters is visiting her grandmother, Mrs. H.L. Sperling, here from her home in Shelby. She expects to spend the month of August here.

Miss Peggy Graveley, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Graveley, returned home Saturday after spending a week at Boulder. Mrs. Graveley met her daughter in Helena

1968

“Barry White in First Place in State Bulldogging”

Barry White is currently in first place in the Montana Rodeo Association competition for a beautiful saddle in bulldogging division. With only a few rodeos left in the season, Barry stands a very good chance of winning the event. He placed third in the Whitehall rodeo last Sunday with a time of 6.1.

“Pete Greaves Has First Wheat to Montana Elevator”

Pete Greaves of Toston delivered a load of wheat to Montana Elevator in Townsend Saturday to become the first one in with 1968 crop harvested. Jim Vick, elevator manager, says the wheat weighed 61 pounds and according to Greaves, the field was making 30 to 35 bushels per acre.

“Radersburg News”

Mr. and Mrs. Clark Edenfield were water skiing and fishing on Lake Townsend Monday.

David Castleberry left Thursday by plane for Camp San Onefre, R.I., for eleven weeks training at Naval Justice School after visiting his family here for two weeks.

Mrs. Grace Hollaway, Mrs. Carrie McCormick and Mrs. Anna Moudree of Townsend were brief visitors in the Burg Tuesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Lavender and family of Westby visited Monday with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hough. Bill came to attend his class reunion, held at the Legion Club in Townsend.

Jerry Williams of Great Falls visited with Mr. and Mrs. John Williams and Tom Sunday.

Mrs. George Harris, Paul, Ronnie and Patti Price visited with friends and relatives in Butte Thursday.

1996

“Townsend Appreciation Day”

The Montana Army National Guard extended a warm welcome to Townsend-area residents with an appreciation day July 24 at the Limestone Hills Training Facility. More than 50 residents toured the firing range and got first-hand looks at the Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle. The top three Bradley teams who qualified on the vehicle during the two-week training session leading up to last Wednesday’s demonstration showed their skills by firing TOW missiles at mid-range stationary targets on the range. The National Guard provided lunch for the local visitors, whose tour completed a summer of training at the site west of Townsend. A Bradley, as well as one of the National Guard’s Black Hawk helicopters, will be on display this week end at the Broadwater County Fair.

“1996 Rodeo Parade”

Longtime Broadwater Rodeo Association Treasurer Mel Pottruff, is the grand marshall for the Western Days Parade, which begins Sunday at noon.

“Mel’s been involved with the rodeo association in the same capacity since the rodeo began 33 years ago,” said Broadwater Rodeo Association Secretary, Elaine Graveley. “Mel was chosen as grand marshall to honor him.”
