Everyone tells you that the last game, the last competition, the last performance, or the last pep rally will be difficult, but as a Christian, I was never warned about what it would feel like to attend church with my church family for the last time. I have been going to the Trailhead Christian Fellowship Church ever since I can remember, and I have grown to love the group of believers and treasure Christ even more. After the church service ended, Mrs. Beth Roelofs came over and gave me a huge hug. That alone was enough to make the tears flow. This was going to be harder than I thought.
I believe that God is present in every place, at every time, and in every person's life, so I know that as I find another church, God will make a way and I will find a church that has the right Jesus. However, I have never known anything outside the comfort of the local church, so the humility that has come with starting over has been overwhelming, and this humility that comes with a lack of comfort is scary but full of realism.
As comfortable as I have been at Trailhead, I also learned something valuable about growth. Application is arguably the most important part of growth. This isn’t only applying basic principles of the faith, but learning about what God believes about issues such as the Trinity, baptisms, and the Resurrection Story, and actively applying the knowledge to my life and searching for other believers and another church that believes the same thing.
This is what I know to be true, and learning everything I can about this foundation takes a heavy weight off of my shoulders. It is going to be hard to find a new church and a group of fellow believers, however, I know what I believe and can make wise decisions about the church I attend and the group of people I hang around.
I prepared myself spiritually as the time to leave came nearer, and it was still extremely difficult. Know where you stand and what you believe. Hold firm to it and don’t let go. The physical may get weak and the mind overstimulated, but if the spiritual aspect of your being is abandoned, everything will come tumbling down. John MacArthur put it this way, “Your faith will not fail while God sustains it; you are not strong enough to fall away while God is resolved to hold you,” and now more than ever, I and so many other people, especially amidst the college transition, need to cling to the true faith and the road that has been marked out for us.
