This summer is different than any other summer I have had growing up. It is the end of days spent at home and not having a job to go to for the entire day. It is the end of staying up incredibly late without having to worry about waking up early to get on with my day. It is the end of seeing my friends that I have grown up with for the foreseeable future. All in all, it is the end to a lot of things but it is also a brand-new beginning. The joke of moving out used to be funny and not visible in the near future. However, now it stands ringing the doorbell and I am extremely hesitant to open the door. The other side is filled with new experiences, friends, and a career to work toward. It is filled with learning how to manage finances, time, necessities versus wants, and much more.
High school is over and now the ultimate college experience awaits. So far, I have learned that it takes a lot of work to start new. My parents cannot do every difficult thing for me. I have had to fill out the FAFSA which took far longer than anyone ever expected. I have had to contact my high school as well as Montana State University - Billings and Helena College to send over official transcripts of the classes that I have taken. I have had to sit down and have a meeting with an academic advisor to schedule my next semester's classes. I have also had to sit down and sincerely consider my major. I plan to achieve a degree in Animal Sciences with a focus on biomedical sciences. This is a difficult route with the multiple sciences that I will take, but I also know that I can excel if I manage my learning time wisely. I have also had to send over information outside of my education. I have had to give them my social security number, most of my parents' information, and even my medical history.
There are some exciting parts though. For example, I have already made new friends. By choosing my dorm and my dorm room, I had the opportunity to choose my roommate. I met a girl named Greta from Minnesota. We used a website through the school called My College Roomie to find people with similar interests and we got each other's socials and began to talk! Next thing you know, we decided to become roommates. Though all of the college preparation is incredibly stressful, Greta and I have been going through it together as we each find new experiences to tackle!
A lot of work comes into preparing for college, but it will be worth it in the end. Some people go into adult life by entering directly into the workforce or trade school, but I took the longer route and I can’t wait for you, the Broadwater Community to join me in the college experience.
