The 2024 Aviation Career Exploration (ACE) Academy for high school students was held June 20-22, 2024. The camp is designed to show students the many career opportunities that are available in aviation.
Activities include tour of Boeing’ manufacturing facility, the Army National Guard Aviation Support facility, the air control tower, aviation maintenance program at Helen College, maintenance facility and air ambulance operation and more around Helena. One day was spent in Missoula to tour the Museum of Mountain Flying, the smokejumper base, and an aerial firefighting operation.
The final day activity was a trip to the Canyon Ferry airstrip where pilots from all over were invited to “fly in” and display their aircraft. It was a great opportunity to talk with students that are interested in aviation and the pilots shared knowledge and experiences with students that had lots of questions.
There were approximately 27 aircraft for the students to view and learn about. There were two helicopters, two amphibious planes, a Vietnam eta bird dog complete with wing missiles, multiple Vintage planes, including a travel air, air coups and new airplanes including firefighting planes and Bonanzas.
Many local flying enthusiasts came out to join the students and check out the planes and ask questions.
