Happy 70th Birthday, Townsend Garden Club
Marilyn Lane
The Townsend Garden Club & Study was organized by Mrs. JB Collins on June 18, 1954 with 27 members. “The objective of the Garden club shall be the advancement of gardening education and sponsoring projects for City and County beautification.”
Through the years the Garden Club has completed many projects including the Bluebird Trail for which, Bill Burbart built the bird houses that were placed all over the county and Gueen’s Garden in Masa Park. The Club fills barrels in front of local businesses, the hospital and senior retirement homes, with flowers each spring.
We also had classes on landscaping and gardening. We supported the Broadwater County Fair, Backyards of Broadway and our County Extension office.
The Club is happy to be able to provide one or two $500 scholarships to local High School Seniors each year. We have participated in the local Farmer’s Market. We supported and sponsored Scouts building planters for two rest homes that the residents can plant flowers in. We have helped plant trees in many locations in Townsend. We raised money to place the Blue Star Memorial Marker and put flowers in the garden at Veterans Park across from the Courthouse in Townsend.
