BHS has Amazing Curriculum, Standards, Students, and Staff
Dear Readers,
I am writing this in response to Audrey Martin’s letter published June 7, 2024. While the focus of Ms. Martin’s letter is about Broadwater High School coaches, she included comments about the education received at Broadwater High School. The comments about education are what I am going to address.
The high school class offerings not only meet the state requirements but exceed these requirements. The requirements for graduation can be found on the Townsend School Website, in the Student Handbook. To graduate from BHS, a student must have a minimum of 18.5 specific credits, leaving room for 8.5 elective credits. While BHS offers electives in all subject areas to enrich a student’s education, they also teach all required classes, including four full years of English. The current high school class offerings meet all requirements to attend any college or university chosen by a graduate of BHS. In recent years they have begun offering Dual Credit Classes (high school & college credit concurrently) as well as Early College Classes. Many of these college credit classes are free of charge to students, due to a ruling by the Montana Board of Regents, where students can receive up to six free credits from a Montana college while attending high school. These classes are offered to assist students with an early start to college, however, these college classes are not required to attend college.
“Waivers” have not been necessary for BHS students to attend college. BHS has produced students who have received degrees at over 12 Montana colleges, universities, and technical schools, as well as a variety of apprenticeship programs.
BHS not only has amazing coaches, BHS also has an amazing curriculum, standards, students, and staff.

Editor's Note: I graduated from high school in Townsend. Our class had students attend not only MSU, UM, Western and Montana Tech but the University of Washington and the Ohio State University. The class produced a Doctor, and the longest serving County Attorney in Montana history, an MSU Professor, a college Administrator, 3 mechanical engineers and several that went on to be teachers. I spent 30 years in the software industry - 20 years as a Director of Software development for several international companies.
Broadwater High School has always provided and continues to provide a great education! ‐ Vic Sample
