Two current and past local 4-H members recently received scholarships recognizing them for an outstanding 4-H career. Emily Bird was the recipient of the Broadwater County 4-H Leadership Scholarship. The purpose of this $700 scholarship is to help 4-H youth further their education. It is awarded to active 4-H members who have exhibited strong leadership skills and successfully completed at least two 4-H projects each year of high school.
Emily Bird is a nine-year member of the Toston Blue Ribbon 4-H Club. Her primary 4-H projects have been rabbit and swine. Through the 4-H swine project, Emily has learned to balance the project cost with caring for an animal that is fed well and ends in a high-quality project. She is highly accomplished in the rabbit project as well winning Grand Champion Senior Showman last year and Best in Show Rabbit numerous times. Through her quiet introspective leadership style, Emily goes out of her way to help younger members at Fair and 4-H activities. On her scholarship application, Emily credits 4-H with helping her come out of her shell and become more comfortable talking to groups of people. She states, “To me, 4-H means getting life experience leadership skills and learning how to work hard and raise good quality livestock”. Outside of 4-H, Emily participates in numerous school activities including volleyball, tennis and student organizations. Emily plans to attend Montana State University-Northern in Havre and major in agriculture operations technology. Her long-term goal is to attend veterinary school to become a large animal veterinarian.
Additionally, Colton Noyes was the recipient of a Montana Wheat & Barley 4-H Scholarship provided through the Montana 4-H Foundation. A 2022 graduate of Broadwater High School, Colton was a ten-year member of the Toston Blue Ribbon 4-H Club. Throughout his 4-H career, Colton had a strong focus on leadership and community service which he has maintained at the collegiate level. During high school, he held multiple 4-H officer positions and was president of the Student Council and Broadwater FFA Chapter. His collegiate activities include Alpha Lambda Delta, Collegiate FFA, Young Farmers & Ranchers, MSU Agriculture Ambassadors and Crop Science Club where he is currently serving his second term as secretary. Additionally, he has documented over 1,500 hours of community service throughout high school and college. He has been recognized with many awards including some of the highest achievements in the county 4-H program, the 4-H Leadership and Citizenship Awards. He is currently on the Dean’s List at Montana State University pursuing a degree in crop science.
Congratulations to you both! You are a testament to the power of 4-H. Good luck in your future endeavors and thank you for everything you contributed to Broadwater County 4-H. To inquire about the 4-H program, contact MSU Extension in Broadwater County at 406-266-9242 or broadwater@montana.edu.
