The Townsend Tree Board ended up planting six trees on the Townsend School campus during Arbor Week 2024. One tree was planted with the 5th graders and teachers. Five more were planted with Jemma Loughery’s high school horticulture class. All of the trees planted replaced memorial trees that were planted on the campus and lost due to new school construction. The trees planted replaced trees planted for Terry Frost, Kris Rains, Brett Toney, the Rains family, and for Levi Groth.

So far in 2024, the Tree Board has received a $7,500 grant from Graymont and an $850 Tree City USA grant to help pay for the 2024 trees to be planted in Broadwater County. This grant money allowed the Tree Board to purchase a total of 192 trees in 2024. Thank you to Graymont and Tree City USA for these generous donations.

During Arbor Week, the horticulture students also helped bolt a Hot Wings maple tree together at 400 N. Walnut. The tree split on an upper crotch during a windstorm. The tree was temporarily strapped together by the owners, JB and Monica Howick. Monica asked the Tree Board if they wanted to do the surgery as part of a training class for the horticulture class. This is the second tree the high school students have had a chance to save in Townsend.
