SafeSitter Classes Offered to New Babysitters

Carla Amundson, STOKE Board Member

STOKE and the Rotary Club of Townsend are partnering to offer the Safe SitterĀ® program to Broadwater County youth beginning June 15th at the Lodge.

Potential babysitters looking to gain SafeSitterĀ® training can learn crucial planning and decision-making skills from the program. The SafeSitter program began in 1980 and has its roots in Indiana. Patricia Keener, M.D. at Indiana University School of Medicine saw the need for essential safety training in caring for young children after the accidental death of a small child. Classes are for youth in grades 6-12. This instructional program is taught by a Safe SitterĀ® certified instructor, Elaine Roy. The course material includes dealing with a medical emergency; babysitting as a business; childcare responsibilities; safety; first aid; choking and CPR. Lunch is provided.

The SafeSitter program emphasizes personal safety. Graduates can offer parents comfort and confidence in the safe care they provide to young children. Class size is limited. The class will be conducted on Saturday, June 15 & Monday, June 17, 2024, from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm daily. Attendance at BOTH days is required.

People interested in registering should go online to stokemt.org. The cutoff date for registration is June 7.

A graduation ceremony will be at 2:30 pm on June 17th at the Lodge. Parents, grandparents and siblings are invited to a program showcasing what the SafeSitters have learned.

Questions can be directed to the local SafeSitter Site Coordinator,
