Food and fun are a hard combination to beat when it comes to bringing in the community for a social gathering. Holy Cross Church members did a great job serving dinner, putting on a silent auction and generally giving families a place to enjoy games and each other.
Shawna Wickens, who is a busy mom with three teenagers and one grown son, organized the event with the help of her capable crew. She said the church had been planning the event for the end of their Family Night monthly series which gathered community members to learn about themselves and their relationship to God’s message. This week was the last in the series. Several of the members of the group’s youth have been wearing t-shirts with the logo ‘Created with a Purpose'.
Father Cody Williams pastors the local Catholic church. He explained that the next series, called Faith Night, will be about the basics of the theology of the body based on a social justice theme. The new series will begin sometime next fall. Father Cody, who has written the programs, said one of the main events of the next series will include a hunger banquet. Participants will be served rice and beans, some just rice and others a five-course meal, so people can experience what world hunger really looks and feels like. He encourages anyone to come. “The series is interesting and open to everyone”. he said.
According to Wickens, the series has been sponsored through grants from the Catholic Diocese of Helena Foundation.
