Tree Board Uses Trees to Teach Students

Patrick Plantenberg, Tree Board Chair

The Townsend Tree Board received its annual shipment of trees on April 30th from JF Schmidt Nursery in Oregon.

The Tree Board receives trees to plant in the community each year. The Tree Board considered not getting trees the last two years but decided to do it anyway when approached by Jemma Loughery, Broadwater County High School horticulture class teacher. She wanted her students to have a chance to learn about trees and their care.

Patrick Plantenberg, Tree Board Chair, has been helping teach the class for the last two years. The students learn how to prune and plant trees. The students have done tree surgery bolting trees together that have split in the wind. The students are taught basic landscaping skills like how to design landscape beds to minimize maintenance.

This has been a great opportunity for the students to learn what it might be like to work at a nursery, garden center, or landscape company. The students also might want to open their own small business as an arborist, landscaper, etc.

This will be the last year that the Tree Board receives a wholesale shipment of trees. The Tree Board will simply purchase retail trees from the local nurseries to do the same work in the coming years.

Tree Board Plans School Campus Clean-up Day on May 17

The Townsend Tree Board is planning a school campus cleanup day on May 17th starting at 8 am. This is an annual event sponsored by the Tree Board, Rotary, and other groups each year to make our school campus look good for graduation. The school is our gathering place for many large events and graduation brings in many people from out of town.

We need to have the campus looking good for everyone. Please help. For more information contact Patrick Plantenberg, Tree Board Chair, at 406-431-4615.

This year, BCHS horticulture class students and 4H Exchange Students will be helping with the event. We will meet on the south side of the high school in the parking lot at 8 am.

4H Exchange Students Help Tree Board

On Saturday, May 4, 4H Exchange students and their families helped the Tree Board finish potting over 100 bareroot trees. Graymont purchased the 4H Exchange Students' labor at the Ag Appreciation Dinner and donated their hours to the Tree Board.

The Tree Board thanks Graymont for donating these hard-working individuals.

The 4H Exchange Students will also be helping the Tree Board clean up the school campus on May 17th. It is so great to see our students helping in the community. Thank you 4H!
