McMurray Wins Gianforte’s Endorsement

Gov. Greg Gianforte has endorsed Kyle McMurray over Jane Gillette in the hotly contested Republican primary election race for the House District 77 seat in the legislature. The district, newly created by reapportionment, covers all of Broadwater County and a small portion of Gallatin County.
The Republican governor’s campaign office issued a list of his legislative campaign endorsements on April 25. He said the candidates he endorsed will work with him to cut taxes, reform Montana’s property tax system and cut property taxes. He also said they will support law enforcement, apprenticeships, trades education and fund public schools.
Gillette, a rural Three Forks resident, has served two terms in the legislature representing what is now the old House District 64. She issued a statement calling McMurray a liberal “funded by Democrats, and transgender and medical lobbyists” in contrast to herself as “a Trump conservative with an A-plus rating from the Family Foundation and Freedom Index.”
In response, McMurray said in a newspaper interview that Gillette’s legislative record has hindered progress. “She is extremely conservative and that is how she votes,” he said. “Because of some of the extreme right opinions we’re not getting things done.” He blamed the far right in the last two legislative sessions for the lack of progress in reforming property taxes. “I’m very conservative but I feel like I can work with other folks who also have good ideas and I think she’s proven she can’t.”
McMurray, a lifelong resident of Gallatin County, is a retired optometrist and businessman. He said he wants to focus on reforming property taxes and protecting Montana values,
