Chamber Receives Donation for Highway Sign

MT 43 News Staff Reporter

Townsend Area Chamber of Commerce Co-Chairman Keith Hartmann accepted a $20,000 donation for a new highway sign from Townsend Rotary President Jeanine Stone Tuesday night at the Rotary regular meeting.

The electronic sign will be used to promote Townsend and Broadwater County businesses, events and activities.

Plans began in 1999 according to Chamber member Doug Sitton to update the informational sign near the railroad tracks at the corner of Highway 287 and Broadway Street. When negotiations with the BNSF railroad did not work out, the group worked to locate the new sign on city-owned land at the “Welcome to Townsend” rock near the swimming pool. According to Doug Breker, Chamber Vice President, funds for the $80,000 sign came mostly from Walleye Festival conservation fees.

Yesco Signs representative Ben Toney will be overseeing the construction of the sign. The new sign will be electronically operated by TAAC administrators. Toney estimated the sign would be in place by this August.
