Life Is An Adventure
Author: Bill Garwood

LIFE, That’s the way to grab your attention, eh?

Everyone has their own definition of what makes a life, how many actually take the time to think about it? OR do we just saunter through our lives without giving it a single moment to reflect on who we are, what we want to do with our lives, or even have I fed the Squirrels yet?

When I was just a Lad - don’t ask - after high school I “THOUGHT” I knew what I wanted to do and be. Sure I, did life has a way of laughing at you right in your face! There’s an old saying “Want to see God Laugh? Tell him your plans”. Yep, that will make you think. After looking all over the place for my next step in life after graduation I found….Nada, Zilch, Bupkis, in other words, nothing that I wanted to do for a living. I, of course, decided that the Army was for me, I joined for only 3 years. 33 years later I retired, I still can’t believe how quickly those days went. Or how much I miss Army life!

The most interesting thing we ALL find out about ourselves as we leave home is, we know NOTHING about ourselves. Life will give you a crash course in your strengths, and your weaknesses. We all have to learn this, getting out in the world can be scary, however, “you knew there was a however lurking in there didn’t you?” Challenges make you stronger! Nobody was more surprised than me that I became a good leader of people.

First: Listen to people around you, this is MOST important. You learn from people what mistakes are, or how to be prepared. Remember the Boy Scouts? Yep “Be Prepared!"

Nowadays you have to be extra careful how you talk to people, I have seen people, even around here, that if someone “THINKS” you have insulted them, there is a problem. A few workers here in town seemed to curse or seem all exasperated if a customer actually wants service or has a question. “How dare they?” folks know want what they want, that’s not double talk it’s the truth. I don’t care what weird stuff they ask for, it’s your job to help them out. “How long it remains your job, can rely on your attitude!"

For the most part, I have always been a happy-go-lucky guy. I do tend to growl when something doesn’t go my way, or I am dealing with a customer who wants to tell me what “they think” I should be doing. I always wonder why don’t they start a business, where they can put their policies in play? Then THEY could deal with folks that think THEY have all the answers. Nah that wouldn’t be any fun.

So live, enjoy your lives and learn from life what makes you happiest, and is important to you. If you stand around and just watch, everything you ever wanted to do or be will pass you by. Life isn’t for the faint-hearted, jump in and swim!
