Townsend residents gathered for a parade Sunday to mark the 21st anniversary of the New York, Washington and Pennsylvania September 11, 2001, tragic loss of more than 3,000 Americans. An onlooker would not have observed much sadness as the children laughed and picked up candy, but the solemnity of the moment was evident; people removed their hats and put their hands on their hearts.
The parade included members of the American Legion Auxiliary, first responders, fire trucks and the Broadwater Ambulance. District 70 legislative representative, Julie Dooling paid her respects by walking in the parade.
Carolyn McPheeters of Gallatin Gateway had seen Townsend’s parade advertised in the paper. “I came to see the parade and pay my respects. I think it is important to attend these events so people don’t forget what happened. And to remember it could happen again. I came too to honor and support first responders all over the nation who head into the fire, not away from it,” she said.
Every waving flag, hand-covered heart, and deeply felt prayer asking God to bless America is a declaration of thanks to all those who have served. You've shown by example what it truly means to belong to the land of the free and the home of the brave.—Anonymous
