Broadwater High School junior, Luci Horne, qualified to play at the 49th AAU girls junior National Volleyball Championship finals in Orlando, June 21–29.

She finished with the BHS girls’ team in November of 2021, then joined the Capital City Club. Billings Big Sky Club won the championship during conference play in Billings. During that game, the Big Sky Club coach had watched the 5-foot 2-inch Townsend girl play. She invited Luci to try out and go with the Big Sky Club to Orlando for the finals. Luci won the spot libero, the position which is in the back row of the team.

“The first day of the tournament was rough,” she said, “because I had never played with the Big Sky girls so the chemistry just wasn’t there, but by the third day of playing we won all three of our games.” They placed fourth in their division. She estimated there were 4,400 teams from all over the country, including a team from Puerto Rico.

A highlight of the nine-day trip was going to Universal Studios Resort with her new volleyball friends. After the tournament, she made a second trip to Universal Studios with her family who accompanied her to the tournament.

Luci has played volleyball every year since she was in sixth grade, except during COVID. She is passionate about the sport and also excited about making new friends and working with her teammates. She will finish out her summer working at J Rock Jewelry in Townsend until school and sports start this fall.
