Southwest Montana Academic Olympics

Southwest Montana middle school and high school students challenged one another at the annual Southwest Montana Academic Olympics on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 12-13 in the Strand Union Ballrooms at Montana State University. As many as 600 brilliant students representing over 20 schools from all over southwest Montana competed in teams testing their command of general knowledge including, but not limited to science, social studies, mathematics, and language arts. Each round consisted of two five-person teams answering questions head-to-head delivered in a jeopardy-like format utilizing a buzzer response system.

The middle school students were up first on Tuesday, March 12th. Townsend Middle School sent three teams to contend and they certainly showed well, with each team winning at least one match-up. Team A consisting of 8th graders Ayden Thompson, Ava Boaz, and Emma Delgado, as well as 7th graders Clayton Rice and Alex Weiss won 3 rounds and lost 2. Team B was made up of 8th graders Ethan Faas, Tia Tallwhiteman and Adelyn White, 7th graders Harley Cox and Lucas Feller and 6th grader Rigo Delgado. They won 2 and lost 2 matches. Team C consisting of all 6th graders went 1 and 2, but was one question away from winning their last round. Team C was Andrew Beatty, Kathryn Six, Dannika, Gabe Krueger and Teagon Kraft.

The high school competition followed on Wednesday with Broadwater High also sending three teams. Team A consisted of Senior Cooper Hines, Junior Jazlyn Martin, Sophomores Harper Wolfgram and Noah Borror and Freshman Angel Sentinella. Making up Team B were Seniors Luci Horne and Caleb LeLacheur, Junior Karsyn Sangray, Sophomore Lexi Davies and Freshman Shalyn Sentinella. The C teams were Seniors Berlin Korr and Tampsen Kockler, Sophomores Aspen Slyker and Merick Easter and Freshmen Kyla Meissner and Ryan Christianson.

Prior to traveling to MSU for the team competition, the students complete a written test of 100 questions. Results are unknown until arrival at the team contest. Two middle school Bulldogs received special awards from that written test. Ayden Thompson was 4th overall in the 8th grade division while Rigo Delgado, a current 6th grader was 6th overall in the combined 6th/7th grade division. Congratulations go to the high school students also earning special recognition. Senior Cooper Hines received the 2nd highest overall individual written test score for all students. Twins Shalyn and Angel Sentinella finished 3rd and 6th respectively among the freshman and Noah Borror placed 4th among the Sophomores. Well done Bulldogs!
