In the spring of 1970, the Townsend Star was for sale. My newlywed husband and I gave some thought to buying it. He was just home from Army service in the Vietnam war. We were both University of Montana Journalism School graduates with reporting and business experience. It seemed like a good fit. As it turned out, we moved to Butte, his hometown, where he worked for the Montana Standard, and I pursued other interests.

Fast forward 52 years. An opportunity to buy the Townsend paper presented itself. That didn’t work out.

I contacted several of the busiest people in Broadwater County. They were shopkeepers, community activists, farmers and ranchers, and retired folks. Fifteen people showed up for a meeting to talk about starting up a new weekly newspaper. Before many weeks passed, we legally incorporated as MT 43 News.

Welcome, all readers and advertisers. Welcome not to OUR paper but to what we hope will be YOUR paper.

We want it to become a comprehensive and reliable source of news and a voice for community activities and opinions. We want to cover all manner of local events, city and county government, our school, churches, and promote local businesses. Our coverage must be without bias or political agenda.

So, who are we?

Founding members of MT 43 News, Inc., are Rachael Elliott-Brug, Albertina Homann, JB Howick, Linda Huth, Jeff Langlinais, Nancy Marks, Jeff Ross, and Vic Sample. Board officers are Howick, president; Ross, vice president; Sample, treasurer, and Marks, secretary. All serve without compensation. We also thank local attorney Peter Simon for legal assistance.

Howick is serving as volunteer publisher and editor. To start with, our writers have been unpaid volunteers. They are members of our founding group, people involved in various activities, some of your neighbors and your friends. We are not professional or perfect writers ourselves, so we don’t expect anyone else to be either. As time goes on and business success allows, we intend to hire an editor, a reporter and other staff as needed. As finances allow, we would also like to pay writers for their news and feature offerings. Up to now, we have been financed entirely by donations.

Our office is in the Read¬ing Leaves bookstore at 401 Broadway Street, Townsend. You can leave a phone message at 406-266-0086.
