Arguably one of the most important jobs in the US and the world is ranching. Ranching provides all of the beef that we eat today, which I can tell you is a lump sum. Everyone respects the ranching industry, but not everyone can do it. This soon-to-be graduate spends most of her time outside school and sports on her family’s ranch, the Hahn Ranch. She has lived and worked on this ranch all of her life. In March and April, you can see her helping with the yearly calving, and in the summer season, she can be seen with her dad and brothers fixing fences, and water lines, and moving cows through the Elkhorn Mountains. This influential gal is Emily Bird. She has two brothers, Tanner who is in his sophomore year, and Tyler, who is in 3rd grade. Her dad, Cory Bird works on the ranch year-round and her mom, Jennilee Bird runs the trucking office and helps Cory.
Emily Bird has been in Student Council for 3 years, Youth Council for 2 years, Bulldogs Beyond for 2 years, NHS for 2 years, 4-H for 9 years, Volleyball for 4 years, Basketball for 4 years, and Tennis for 4 years. Despite all of her success within those clubs and sports, her favorite thing she has been involved in is Volleyball. She was a varsity setter for all four years and in 2023, she was the team captain, All-State Selection, 1st team All-Conference, and All-Area Player of the Year. Her team placed 1st in Districts, 2nd in Divisionals, and 2nd in State. She also broke the MHSA record for most assists in a match and also broke 3 school records. Playing volleyball has taught her the importance of mental toughness, respect, hard work, and never having a quitting mentality. These skills that she has learned not only benefit her on the court but will also benefit her in her future career.
After High School, Emily will be attending MSU-Northern to study Agriculture Operations Technology and continue playing volleyball. Broadwater County will be a community that she will miss. The support that the community shows is indescribable. From all of the adults who advise the students, the kids who support each other and build each other up, and the teachers who never give up on the kids. It is rare to see how much our teachers care for the student body and will stop at nothing to help them succeed and celebrate with them.
Though Emily is leaving for some time, she will come back often and we’ll always see her setting it up on the courts. Emily has inspired everyone of all ages with her incredibly hard work and she will leave an amazing legacy here in Townsend with her achievements and even her outstanding personality.
