“Artist of the Month”
The State Bank of Townsend’s Artist of the month for March – wood carver Ole Olsen – sees himself more as a craftsman than an artist. Ole began carving decoys in the 1940s for a practical reason; duck hunting. Over the years, he has refined his skills, creating ever more realistic figures out of soft cedar and pine blocks, bringing color to them with spray paints.
Whether it’s a canvasback or a mallard, each carving takes at least a full day of labor. Once completed, each field-ready piece gets Ole’s signature and date of completion, before hitting the ponds.
Six of Ole Olsen’s hand-carved decoys will be on display at the State Bank of Townsend throughout the month.
