Love is a Choice

As February unfolds, love takes center stage. While many perceive love as a feeling, my life experiences and daily reflections have led me to believe that love is not merely a fleeting emotion but a deliberate choice.
You are presented with the opportunity to choose love every single day. Admittedly, this choice can be challenging. It's all too familiar to fall into the comfort of routines, patterns, and habits that lack eternal significance.
In relationships, the temptation to become numb, idle, or indifferent can be overpowering. Choosing love requires a conscious effort and a willingness to break free from the daily grind.
Life isn’t just about our personal needs; it is about mutual support, nurturing spiritual growth, and praying for one another. But love extends beyond these acts—it involves encouragement, accountability, kindness, compassion, and a steadfast focus on matters of the heart.
Your heart is inherently tender and can easily be broken, shaped by the experiences, traumas, and hurtful words you have encountered throughout your life.
I clearly remember the old childhood adage, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” That can’t be further from the truth. Our bones will and do heal with time, but the impact of hurtful words can last a lifetime. Our hearts, beautifully formed at birth, bear the imprints of the pain, trauma, and spoken words that mold them.
You see, we are all on a journey to find peace, love, joy, and happiness. But that comes from within as things and people can’t possibly fill those voids.
Love is more than a warm feeling or movie-style romance, which reminds me of the Christmas Hallmark movies where we can escape into the beautiful and captivating small-town charm. Perhaps the Hallmark movies are so popular because, deep down, internally, you are on a journey to find peace, love, joy, and happiness.
Love, in its truest form, is a heartfelt choice made daily. It involves celebrating the ordinary moments and creating your unique, enduring, and one-of-a-kind love story. This commitment is not a one-time event but a continuous choice to recommit over and over again.
Remember, there is power in your words and actions, and it has significant power in shaping your connections. It is how you communicate. You share joy, hope, and sadness through your communication. The impact of your words is profound and can either build others up or tear them down. Be intentional as you consider the impact of your words before you speak.
Are your words rooted in anger, fear, and insecurity, or do they come from a place of compassion, kindness, truth, and goodness?
In navigating the complexities of relationships, be mindful of the choices you make each day—the choice to love, to speak with kindness, and to act with compassion. In these choices, you cultivate a love that transcends fleeting emotions and becomes a steadfast commitment to the well-being of those you hold close to your heart.
Love is not just a feeling but a conscious choice we make daily.
It's a commitment to celebrate the ordinary, nurture the extraordinary, and weather the storms together.
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others; it is not self-seeking; it is not easily angered and keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."(1Corinthians 13:4-7)
Remember that our daily choices to love, speak with kindness, and act with compassion create a beautiful love story that withstands the test of time.
