Townsend Trees Planted for Special Purposes

This is the 23rd of a series of articles about trees planted in Townsend and Broadwater County to honor people, special events, or for other purposes.

The Tree Board hopes people will come forward with more information on other trees planted on public as well as private property so the tree and its purpose can be documented.

108) Prunus padus 'Merlot', Merlot European Bird Cherry; planted on Arbor Day April 26, 2013, at Townsend School District #1 north of the Community Library to Honor the 2013 Arbor Day Poster Contest Winners: 1st Place - Zyanne Cervantes; 2nd Place – Peyton Vogl; 3rd Place – Kyzer Bair. Teacher Aubra Lewis. The tree was planted by the 5th-grade students and teachers and the Tree Board. The tree was paid for by a DNRC Arbor Day grant. The tree died back and has been pruned by BCHS Horticulture Class students to try and save it. The tree is in good condition.

109) Betula pendula ‘Dalecarlica’, Dalecarlica Weeping Birch; planted in 2007 north of the Community Library in Memory of Kris Rains, Broadwater County High School Class of 1998 Graduate. Kris Passed Away February 17, 2007. The tree was planted on Arbor Day April 27, 2007, by Family, and the Tree Board. The tree was funded by the Rotary Club of Townsend. The tree was removed as part of the new elementary school construction in 2022 and needs to be replanted.

110) Betula pendula ‘Dalecarlica’, Dalecarlica Weeping Birch; planted in 2007 north of the Community Library in Memory of Brett Toney, Broadwater County High School Class of 1998 Graduate. Brett Passed Away February 17, 2007. The tree was planted on Arbor Day April 27, 2007, by the BCHS Student Council and the Tree Board. The tree was funded by the Tree Board. The tree was removed as part of the new elementary school construction in 2022 and needs to be replanted.

111) Maackia amurensis Amur Maackii; planted on April 29, 2012, to honor the 2012 Arbor Day Poster Contest winners: 1st Place: Riley Olsen; 2nd Place: Abby Beebe; 3rd Place: Karissa Hausauer. Teacher Mrs. Aubra Lewis. The tree was planted by the 5th graders, teachers, and the Tree Board. The tree was paid for by a DNRC Arbor Day Grant. The 2012 Arbor Day tree died and needs to be replanted.

112) Picea pungens 'Iseli Fastigiate'; Columnar Colorado Blue Spruce planted in 2011 at the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Memory of Karen Salmi. 1953-2011. A Friend to Everyone. The tree was planted by Neal Salmi and family and the Tree Board. The tree is in good condition.
