Townsend Trees Planted for Special Purposes

This is the 20th of a series of articles about trees planted in Townsend and Broadwater County to honor people, special events, or for other purposes.
The Tree Board hopes people will come forward with more information on other trees planted on public as well as private property so the tree and its purpose can be documented.
93) Sorbus hybrida, Oakleaf Mountain ash planted in 2015 at Broadwater County High School in memory of Connie Howard Schnortz.
• The tree was planted in 2015 on the north side of the west entrance sidewalk to Broadwater County High School in memory of Connie Schnortz - Beloved Paraprofessional. 1974-2014. The tree was donated by the Middle School teachers. The tree was planted by the teachers and the Tree Board. The tree is treated for fireblight annually and is in good condition.
94) Acer tataricum ‘GarAnn’, Hot Wings Tatar Maple planted in 2019 north of the Community Library in memory of James and Ossia Kearns.
• This original Amur Maackia (Maackia amurensis) tree was planted in 2012 on Arbor Day north of the Community Library in memory of James and Ossia Kearns. The tree was planted by the Tree Board, the Broadwater County High School Green Club, and the Kearns family. The tree died and Tree Board replaced it with the Hot Wings Tatar Maple in 2019. The tree is in good condition.
95) Acer tataricum ‘GarAnn’, Hot Wings Tatar Maple; planted in 2019 in McCarthy Park in memory of Doreen Sautter.
• The original Prairie Splendor Norway Maple (Acer platanoides 'Prairie Splendor') was planted in 2016 in McCarthy Park in memory of Doreen Sautter. The tree died and the Hot Wings Maple was planted in 2019. The tree was donated by the members of the Townsend Garden Club and Study. Doreen was a long-time resident of Townsend and was active in the Community. She was always ready to lend a hand to any project or person in need. We will miss her. The tree was planted by Garden Club members and the Tree Board. The tree is located along the left field fence in the center of the park. The tree is in good condition.
96) Tilia x flavescens ‘Dropmore’, Dropmore Linden planted in 2011 at the Broadwater County Fairgrounds to honor Charlotte Lewis.
• This tree was planted on Arbor Day 2011 at the Broadwater County Fairgrounds in appreciation of Charlotte Lewis’s 20 years of service as the Broadwater Conservation District Administrator. The tree was planted by family, friends, and the Tree Board. The tree is south of the road near the west entrance fence south of the 4H building. The tree is in good condition.
97) Betula populifolia x Whitespire Birch 'Penci-2' 'Royal Frost', Royal Frost Weeping Birch; planted in 2008 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in memory of Grace McGovern Berberet.
• This tree was planted on June 13, 2008, on the west side of Holy Cross Catholic Church on South Walnut Street in memory of Grace McGovern Berberet. A life dedicated to family, church, and community. The tree was planted by family members and the Tree Board. The tree was donated by the family. The tree is in good condition.
