Preschool on Broadway Open for Business
MT 43 News Staff Reporter
Sir Maggie the Mighty was on the reading list for 12 preschoolers at the Preschool on Broadway Wednesday, January 3. Director and owner Amanda Hazlett read the book by Michael P. Waite with great expression to the 3, 4 and 5-year-olds as they prepared for naptime.
Hazlett and her husband Dan have teamed up with Arron Christiansen and his wife Emily in July of 2023 to create a beautiful space for the much-needed daycare in the newly remodeled Power Townsend building. The room is huge and airy with lots of light and activity centers. “We agreed to go into this project knowing had badly Townsend needs daycare and because I got to design the room,” Hazlett related.
The preschool is licensed to care for 20 students five days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Handicapped children are accepted. One of her two helpers, Megan Osborne indicated there would be adequate room for 20 students.
Hazlett encourages all parents who are interested in signing up their child should apply for the Best Beginnings Scholarship through the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) at the mt.gov website. The cost of the preschool will be based on how many days of service and whether parents are able to qualify for the scholarships.
Breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks are included in the service as well as playtime, and organized play which includes a stage. Students have use of an ADA bathroom and a potty-training bathroom. The facility also has a laundry room and open kitchen as well as ample storage areas.
Hazlett explained her sick-child policy. Any child with a temperature of 99 degrees or who has diarrhea or vomiting within a 24-hour period must not come to the school. “Kids must be fully vaccinated as certified by the state, but this does not include flu or COVID vaccinations,” she said.
Hazlett who has a BA in English, decided when her family moved to Townsend, she wanted to be home with her children. She began taking courses for licensure for preschool teaching through the Montana State Resource and Referral Program through DPHHS. The courses involved early childhood education and safety training from the Red Cross. She is obligated to take an additional 16 hours of training annually to update her skills. In addition to operating this facility, she also operates a preschool at The Lodge.
