Townsend Trees Planted for Special Purposes

This is the nineteenth of a series of articles about trees planted in Townsend and Broadwater County to honor people, special events, or for other purposes.
The Tree Board hopes people will come forward with more information on other trees planted on public as well as private property so the tree and its purpose can be documented.
88) Pyrus ussuriensis 'Bailfrost', Mountain Frost Ussurian Pear; planted in 2012 on the north side of the swimming pool in memory of Barbara L. Stoner.
• The tree was planted in 2012 on the north side of the swimming pool in memory of Barbara L. Stoner - The Greatest Mother and Grandmother in the Whole World. The tree was donated by Barbara’s four daughters and planted by family and the Tree Board. The tree is treated for fireblight annually and is in good condition.
89) Prunus padus, Mayday Tree; planted in 2019 south of the Alliance Church parking lot in memory of Cathy Brown.
• This original Ginnala Maple (Acer ginnala) tree was planted in 2009 south of the Alliance Church parking lot in memory of Cathy Brown. Loving Wife, Mother, and Grandmother. Missed by All. Loved by All. July of 2009 to Heaven. The Brown Family. The tree was planted by family and friends. The original tree died and was replaced in 2019 with the Mayday Tree. The tree is treated for fireblight annually and is in good condition.
90) Fraxinus americana ‘Autumn Purple’, Autumn Purple White Ash; planted in 2012 in the Heritage Park playground in memory of Joni Shearer.
• This tree was planted in 2012 in the Heritage Park playground in memory of Joni Shearer. The tree was planted by friends, family, and the Tree Board. The tree is located west of the east swing set. The tree is in good condition.
91) Aesculus glabra, Ohio Buckeye; planted in 2013 north of the Community Library to honor the BCHS Class of 1962.
• This tree was planted in 2013 north of the Community Library to honor the BCHS Class of 1962. The tree was planted on Arbor Day 2013 by the Class of 1962, the Tree Board, and Townsend School District #1 students. The tree was donated by the Class of 1962. The tree is in good condition.
92) Pyrus ussuriensis, ‘Mordak’, Prairie Gem Flowering Pear; planted in 2012 at the Broadwater County Health Service building at 124 N. Cedar to honor Diana (Dana) Hall.
• This tree was planted in 2012 at the Broadwater County Health Service (BCHS) building at 124 N. Cedar to honor Diana (Dana) Hall’s 35 years of service to the community while employed at Broadwater County Health Services. The tree was planted by BCHS employees and the Tree Board. The tree was donated by Broadwater County. The tree is treated for fireblight annually and is in poor condition and will be replaced in 2024.
