Helena, Mont., January 2, 2024 – The Landon Hull Memorial Scholarship opened on January 1 and has funds to support students seeking a degree in psychology or counseling or enrolled in the WWAMI Medical Education program studying medicine with the intent to practice psychiatry. The annual award amount is $4,500 and is intended for undergraduate college students in their junior or senior year, or those pursuing graduate or medical degrees. 2024 marks the first year of this scholarship.
A Bozeman native, Landon Hull was studying Psychology as a freshman at Montana State University when he died by suicide on November 6, 2022—just 5 days past his 18th birthday. Suicide is the leading cause of death among young adults between 15 and 24. In Montana, the CDC notes that suicide is the seventh leading cause of death and data suggests Montana has the highest suicide rate among all states, with a rate of 28.77 deaths per 100,000 residents. Despite these alarming statistics, the expansion of mental health resources remains stagnant.
“Most people who knew Landon had no idea how much he struggled. They only knew the humorous, energetic, creative side of him,” noted Landon’s mother, Kimmelin Hull. “His family saw his struggle to be at peace with himself and to manage the extreme mood swings that came with bipolar disorder. In the end, Montana simply lacked the breadth and depth of resources Landon needed.”
Following Landon’s death and reflecting on their experience, the Hull family decided to be part of the solution. “Through this scholarship, we want to help bridge the persistent gap between Montana's mental healthcare needs and the number of professionals providing that care,” stated Kimmelin. The intent of the scholarship is to generate more mental health professionals in Montana providing counseling, therapy, or psychiatric care, expanding access for Montanans. The scholarship commemorates Landon’s desire to be a counselor, and his ambition to help others in crisis.
