The Diplomat’s Wife by Pam Jenoff – Fiction
Marta Nederman is rescued from a Nazi prison in the waning days of WWII. Away from the brutality of the prison, she is taken to an Allied displaced person’s camp where she is able to recover. At the camp, Marta forms a bond with her nurse and a fellow patient. The American soldier who rescued her sparks a passion in Marta that ignites as she reunites with him in France after her recovery. Sadly, an airplane accident steals her newfound love from her.
After her recuperation, Marta’s travels take her to France and then to England where she is befriended by the aunt of her friend from the displaced person’s camp. While in London she is hired as a secretary in the British Foreign Office and soon marries a British diplomat. Once the Foreign Office realizes that Marta was in the Polish resistance, she is asked to travel back to Poland to make contact with some of her former operatives. After her arrival in Poland, she realizes that not all of her friends are who they claim to be and she may be in serious peril. At this point Marta’s life becomes filled with intrigue, danger, and more than a few surprises.
