Townsend Trees Planted for Special Purposes

This is the eighteenth of a series of articles about trees planted in Townsend and Broadwater County to honor people, special events, or for other purposes.
The Tree Board hopes people will come forward with more information on other trees planted on public as well as private property so the tree and its purpose can be documented.
83) Malus species ‘Klehm Bechtel’, Klehm Bechtel Crabapple; planted in 2014 at 611 Broadway in memory of Autumn Elizabeth Steiner.
• The tree was planted in 2014 at 611 Broadway in memory of Autumn Elizabeth Steiner, a stillborn child born on September 4, 2013, to Tammy Annette Steiner. The tree was donated by Tony Steiner and planted by the Tree Board. The tree is the second tree in the boulevard west of North Cherry Street. The tree is treated for fireblight annually and is in good condition.
84) Betula pendula, European White Birch; planted in 2012 at the Broadwater County Museum to honor Dolly McMaster.
• This tree was planted in 2012 at the Broadwater County Museum to honor Dolly McMaster for the McMasters’ contributions to Broadwater County. The tree is located on the north side of the museum in the boulevard. It is the closest tree to the corner with North Walnut Street. The tree was planted by Dolly McMaster, friends, family, and the Tree Board. The tree is in good condition.
85) Betula papyrifera, Paper Birch; planted in 2014 at the Broadwater County Museum as a memorial tree for Bud McMaster.
• This tree was planted in 2014 at the Broadwater County Museum to honor Bud McMaster for the McMasters’ contributions to Broadwater County. A European White Birch was originally planted in 2012 and died. The Paper Birch was planted in 2014. The tree is located on the north side of the museum in the boulevard. It is the second tree west of the corner of North Walnut Street. The tree was planted by Dolly McMaster, friends, family, and the Tree Board. The top third of the tree died over the winter 0f 2021-2022. It was pruned by the Tree Board in 2022. The tree is in good condition.
86) Euonymus alatus, Burning Bush Tree; planted in 2012 at the Broadwater County Museum in memory of Rose Flynn.
• This tree was planted in the spring of 2012 at the Broadwater County Museum in loving memory of Rose Flynn. Rose was dedicated to family, faith, friends, community, and the preservation of heritage. The tree was planted by the family and the Tree Board. The tree is on the east side of the museum south of the museum sign. The tree was donated by the Broadwater County Museum. The tree has suffered some dieback in recent winters. The tree is in fair condition.
87) Aesculus x carnea ‘Fort McNair’, Fort McNair Red Horsechestnut; planted in 2014 at the Broadwater County Museum in memory of John Prather.
• The tree was planted in 2014 at the Broadwater County Museum in memory of John Prather. John was a Navy veteran and a Lockheed Martin engineer. He enjoyed playing Santa at the museum and being called “Rocket Man”. The tree was donated by his wife Elizabeth and planted by friends, family, and the Tree Board. The tree has suffered some winter dieback and is in fair condition.
