Gifts Can Be A Problem

Dear Two Cents,

I'm slowly trying to declutter my house and space, and one thing I find very difficult is dealing with the stuff other people have given me that I don't want or need. How can I approach this upcoming gift season with my loved ones without seeming ungrateful?

Sincerely, Dreading the Stuff

Dear Dreading,

You are not alone in this situation! And we have a couple of thoughts on how this could be handled.

Firstly, having a conversation with your loved ones would be a good first step. Something along the lines of "You have been so thoughtful in your gifts in years past. This year I'm working hard to clear out my living space as a personal goal. In lieu of the amazing gifts you've given me previously, the gift I would love most is spending time with you and making new memories!" If they insist on gifting you something, you could suggest the idea of consumables or something to be shared during the festivities.

Additionally, if the physical gifts keep coming (some habits are hard to break), animal rescues, thrift stores, women's and children's homes, and homeless shelters - all would be places that can utilize your unwanted items. You could base your suggestions with that in mind.

Sincerely, Two Cents
